  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 cup caramelized onions (about 2 large onions)
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add thinly sliced onions. Cook until soft and golden brown, about 15 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, half of the caramelized onions, shredded cheese, egg, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  4. Transfer the mixture into a loaf pan or shape it into a loaf on a lined baking sheet.
  5. Top with remaining caramelized onions.
  6. Bake for 60-75 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C). Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
